Ujjain : Thousands of devotees took holy dip in Kshipra on the occasion of Vaishakh Purnima here on Monday. All the ghats located on the banks of Kshipra were crowded with people who flocked to take holy dip in the river. About one lakh people took dip in Kshipra till the evening on Monday.

Devotees after taking holy bathe went to Mahakaleshwar temple and prayed for peace and prosperity in their lives. Crowd of devotees was also seen at Gopal Mandir, Mangalnath, Siddhnath and other religious spots of the city.

Defeating the summer, the pilgrims were helped by the cold river water. The administration failed to make proper arrangements for the crowd and they had to face lot of inconvenience and were seen criticising the administration. However, senior police officials were seen keeping vigil at Ramghat. Pilgrims entered the bathing sites peacefully since early morning; however, no police or civil arrangement was seen at the Ghats.

Pilgrims come in large numbers for almost every Purnima or Amavasya here from various parts of the region. But the environmentalists expressed concern over the large-scale dumping of the abandoned bathing gears along the banks of the pilgrimage spot. The littering finds its way into the Kshipra River and is continuously lowering the oxygen content of the water, they pointed out.
