Ujjain : The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was started with much fanfare. Be it government offices, educational institutions or social organisations, for a few days, all looked too enthusiastic to maintain hygiene and cleanliness. But the zeal seems to be fading away fast as garbage can be witnessed almost everywhere in the city.
In most wards, poor lifting of garbage remains a major problem. Residents complain garbage is never lifted on time. The situation is no different even in the posh areas such as Yadav Colony, Dhancha Bhavan, Vishvabank Colony, Rishi Nagar and other Agar Road located colonies.A visit to various localities in the city, including the ones which are considered posh, revealed that large garbage heaps have appeared everywhere. While Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC) officials claim that they are working to resolve the issue, politicians are engaged in a mere war of words.
Even though, the UMC authorities have implemented the first phase of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) project in the city.
But, they have yet not been able to do away with the open garbage system that has made the whole city go stinking during the monsoon and pose a serious threat to public health. The state government has recently shortlisted the city for the Smart City project announced by the Union Government
