Ujjain : The Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan has had no impact in the town as polluting drains are making streets impossible to use. On the other hand, stray cattle have added to the misery. The cattle litter garbage from bins on the city and cause traffic hazards, too.

Presence of a large number of stray cattle wandering on the city roads has been posing risk to the lives of the commuters travelling on the road. Also, a lot of stray cattle can be seen on other roads as well as various parts of the town. It’s a common sight to see stray cattle in most parts of the city. One can easily spot these moving or sitting right in the middle of various city roads thus, making things difficult for the commuters.

Many fatal accidents have taken place due to the cattle wandering on the streets and lives have been lost in past. However, the stray cattle menace is not new in city. The situation is now getting serious due to the increasing number of cattle. Herds of cows can be easily spotted on various roads and inner parts of the city. The situation turns all the more worse during night when it becomes difficult for the drivers to spot the stray animals due to darkness.

The problem of stray animals, causing traffic blockades and accidents on city roads is increasing day by day due to the lackadaisical attitude of the administration towards the issue. While demanding that the problem should be taken seriously, the residents said the issue needed proper planning. They said the number of stray animals such as cows, pigs and dogs was increasing with each passing day. The residents demanded that all stray dogs should be sterilised so as to keep their population under control. According raw data there are around 25,000 stray dogs roaming freely in the city. The information was supplied around eight years ago. It can be presumed that the number of stray canine has increased many folds by now. Stray cows should be provided shelter, say residents.
