The institute could not start PG courses and establish facilities for research work due to space constraint. It seeks additional space and fresh MoU with IET for functioning from the existing location till 2015.

Indore : In a stunning revelation that draws immediate concern from one and all, the Indian Institute of Technology Indore ( IIT- I), which is provincially functioning from Institute of Engineering and Technology ( IET)alt39s building, said that its growth is in a limbo due to space crunch.

‘Because of constraint of space in the existing IET location, we could not establish facilities for research work and commence post- graduate courses. Apart from this, our intake of PhD students is being hampered,’said the IIT Indore in a letter to DAVV of which IET is an institute.

This shocking revelation is egg on Indores face, the only city in the country to have both IIT and IIM in its fold.

Started provisionally from the IET campus in 2008, the IIT Indore had planned to set up its own premises in Simrol by the end of 2011. It was thought that the IIT would shift to its own campus by mid- 2012 anyhow so an MoU for IET location was done till June 2012.

But nothing went to plan.

In 2010 when the IIT went to construct a boundary wall on its site in Simrol, forest officers shoed them away saying 198 of 500 acres proposed to the institute belong to them.

The matter reached the Ministry of Environment and Forests that rejected the appeal of diversion of 80 hectare of forestland falling on the proposed site.

Resultantly, the construction plan hit a deadlock.

However, the Ministry gave its go- ahead for an alternative construction plan in June 2011.

But this whole process delayed the IIT schedule.

Since its need for space continued to grow following increase in students and faculty number, the IIT had to start operating from two campuses – one IET and another at Pithampur.

But this is also not enough to meet growing requirement of space.

The entire expansion plan of the IIT is hampering due to space constraint.

Ready to pay in advance Apart from seeking 25000 sq ft additional built- up space in the IET campus, the IIT Indore has proposed to give advance rent for 40000 sq ft newly constructed building of the IET as well if the same is allocated to it. ‘This advance rent should be adjusted as monthly rent. After the lease period, we will handover the building to the IET,’the IIT said.

It sought a fresh MoU with the IET for constructed and new building and the additional space of 25000 sq ft till December 31, 2015.
