Ujjain : Just as denizens have adjusted their household budgets to accommodate the recent fuel price hike, they now have further worry in the form of soaring vegetable prices. The soaring prices of onion and potatoes seem to be heavily pinching the ‘Aam Aadmi’ in Ujjain,
For instance, tomatoes in the area now cost up to Rs 60 a kg, up from Rs 20, 15 days ago, while Eggplant (Brinjal) now is available at Rs 40 a kg. Even basics like ginger now cost Rs 40 for just 200 grams and prices of bottle gourd, bitter gourd, ridge gourd (tori), round gourd (tinda) and cucumber have risen over 60%. Cauliflower, cluster beans, lady finger and capsicum cost Rs 70 per kg, well over the normal average of around Rs 40.
The common man is being forced to revisit his budget as what would ordinarily bring him one kilogram is now not fetching more than 250 grams.
Scarcity of monsoon so far is the reason for this round of price rise. This has affected supplies to Chimanganj Mandi located Ujjain wholesale vegetable market,” said Ishwer, a trader at market.
“Only 2-3 vegetable trucks arrived here on Friday while our actual requirement is about 8-10 trucks,” said Chintu Malviya, a wholesale vegetable trader there.
