Wary of adding to the smog and haze this smoky Dipwali? Well, the one way to light up Dipwali night without adding to pollution levels is using earthen diyas with wax and a sky lantern, says AvinashSurana, one of the organisers.
“ Every bit of fireworks, including the little sparkler, adds to air pollution. They are bound to, as they contain compounds of phosphorus, sulphur and potassium, and all these are pollutants,” said a scientist, who did not want to be identified.
“ So Dipwali fireworks and ecological concern are a contradiction in terms,” the scientist said here Thursday. “ If you really want a green Dipwali, the only way to light up your home would be to use earthen lamps with cloth wicks. Our aim is to create awareness among the citizens for a cleaner and greener environment, healthy life, less pollution and save the deteriorating world. More than 250 lanterns will be released on the day. The sky lanterns were made- to- order for this event to ensure that everyone got a chance to individually release one or more in the air.
