Ujjain: The civic body will have to think twice before giving approval for installation of 44 4G mobile towers in various city areas. Reliance Jio Infocomm had earlier asked for permission to install 44 4G towers in the city. The Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC) is still unclear about the proposal and has decided not to allow further installation of 4G towers until the policy is finalised.

Maya Trivedi, Congress corporator in the UMC, raised the issue, saying that the company had permission from the state government but also needed the permission of the UMC. Incident happened after she visited and stopped the erection work of tower at Gangaur Darwaja, where company was allegedly installing tower on mid road, blocking the pathway, also Gangaur Darwaja is a route of Mahakal Sawari and is a densely populated area.

Praveen, a local resident says, ‘The already existing mobile towers are leading to health issues among the residents. Not just this, there are so many towers, which are illegal and health hazard, and the authorities have turned a blind eye to them. Shreyansh a youth, another local resident says, ‘Civic body says that they will take all the safety measures while installing these towers but what about those towers which are already installed in the city. We are already facing health problems due to the existing towers flouting safety norms.

The UMC and State goverment is definitely earning profit from the existing towers, which is why they are not removing it. The civic body claims that they will consider all safety measures before installing 4G towers, why they failed to take safety measure into consideration while the installation of existing mobile towers. Tower installation has stopped for time being after intervention of corporators, there is certainly going to be a clash between the company and local administration.
