Ujjain : As Simhastha mela is nearing, development in the city has taken the denizens by surprise. The civic officials seem in a hurry to lay and re-carpet roads in numerous areas of the city, but they are unmindful of the quality of materials being used.

Due to this, various roads are facing Municipal Corporation’s apathy with no quality check on it. All these roads were either constructed or re-carpeted a few months ago. Some of these roads include Dewas Road, Agar Road, Mahananda Nagar, Chintaman Road and many other roads under the Simhastha development. In several parts of the city, the machines can be seen re-carpeting roads, installing direction boards and tube wells, besides carrying out other development works. Some of the roads were in a shambles for long, the Simhastha mela has come as rescue to these, but the construction quality does not promises long future.

When Free Press team visited two such roads on the Mahananda Nagar and the approach road to the Avahan Akhara, it found that the road had not been cleaned with a vacuum cleaner as required at the time of construction before the laying of bitumen and premix. Tack coat too was spread with uneven patterns. The roads also do not have any provision of road gullies to save it from water-logging.

Civil Engineering expert Prof Umesh Pendharkar told that 50 mm thick bitumen and 20 mm thick mix seal (premix carpet) needs to be spread on the bitumen roads to ensure the riding quality. But, the contractors use stages to lay down the materials, so as to save on money and later use it during the maintenance period.

According to sources contractors use these tactics to stow away the construction materials and save money. Also, due to the theft of materials like this, most of the roads take the shape of potholes within days of construction.
