FPJ BUSINESS DESK New Delhi India on Tuesday did not give any assurance of support to visiting French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde for her bid to head the International Monetary Fund ( IMF), saying the selection should be only on the basis o
f alt147 meritalt148 and not alt147 nationalityalt148. alt147 India wants that the selection of the managing director of the IMF should be on the basis of merit and in a transparent manner and not on the basis of any particular nationality,alt148 Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said.
He said India was working with other countries, especially the BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – to build consensus on the issue.
India is still hoping to nominate an alternative candidate, preferably from the developing countries.
The French Minister, however, said that Indian officials had given positive views on her credentials and they are willing to consider her candidature.
