Ujjain :  Seeking the continuous malpractices of anti-social elements in the city, police have issued an advisory to users of social media application and websites.

From past few days continuous unsuccessful events of disturbing communal harmony were rising around the city, fortunately the administration was able to curb them in time. It was noticed that social media apps and websites are being used inappropriately for fueling communal tension around the city as misleading news and photos of the events were shared with much hype over the internet. A senior police official said Spreading offensive text, audio-visual content is also a cyber crime and such offenses are dealt in regarding sections of the law, most of such crimes include fines and imprisonment up to two years. A few offences were punishable up to seven years in prison, he said.

Cybercrimes had showed an upward trend in the wake of growing Internet penetration and interlinking of social media platforms on smart phones in the last few years. But awareness on new laws had helped prevent crimes to a great extent. There are various cases in local police stations relating to misuse of social networking sites such as Facebook, micro-blogging spaces like Twitter, and services like WhatsApp and Hike. These sites are not only used by the tech-savvy new generation but also by older generations also, for communication, social interactions and daily life news from friends. Unfortunately, records show that the youth were mainly involved in these crimes. Social networking sites At times, complaints appear to be mischievous but they do come within the ambit of the Information Technology Act.
