Ujjain: In a bid to transform its traditional image of rude government servant, Ujjain police on Tuesday launched its highly ambitious social initiative ‘ Samarpan’. Through this service, the police have planned to provide safety and security to senior citizens in an effective manner.
It was launched as part of better execution of the ‘ Parents and Senior Citizens Maintenance and Welfare Act, 2007’ as well as the main agenda of Ujjain police. Members of different fora of senior citizens including Radhe Shyam Dubey and Suresh Chandra Sharma, representatives of various non- government organizations including Sanskrati R of Helpage Group and police officers were present in the launching event.
According to SP Anurag Kumar, Samarpan will work on the pattern of counselling centres so as to ensure protection of lives of senior citizens and their property. Weekly counselling will be held at all police stations and SDOP offices.
Also, there will be a separate room for this purpose at SP office. Representatives from senior citizens’ fraternity, lawyers etc will be deputed for the redressal of the issues. Separate registers will be maintained at the said points as well as at the Police Control Room for quick disposal of the complaints.
According to SP, police station- wise lists of senior citizens will be prepared and policemen will visit their homes at least once in a fortnight. Praising the initiative, Commissioner Pandey said that the senior citizens only want good care, safety and honour and Ujjain Police have taken a lead in the State by choosing this work of them as part of a social obligation.
IG Madhukumar said that all policemen should commit to serve the purpose of protecting our elders from harassment and ill- treatment. Collector Sharma was of the view that the launch of Samarpan will boost their self- respect and confidence. Senior citizens Dhruv Bhargava and ashwant Singh Gill also spoke. Dinesh Diggaj conducted the proceedings while ASP ( City) Rajesh Vyas proposed the vote of thanks.
