Ujjain: On the fourth day of Nautapa (a period of nine days of extreme heat) on Thursday, mercury tocuhed the highest point of the season. Temperature soared to 44.5 degree celsius making citizens to remain inside their abodes.   According to the meteorological department, temperature is to hover around 45 degrees celsius in the next one week.

As the temperature recorded steep hike in last few days and set new record of 44.5 degree celsius maximum and 26 degree celsius during night of the season, on Thursday. People confined themselves indoors for most part of the day throughout the region. Denizens had a tough time as the city reeled under the scorching sun with heat waves and the sky remained clear throughout the day. Those riding two-wheelers in particular were seen covered with scarves to protect themselves.

The met department predicts overcast condition with an increase in relative humidity. The entire Malwa region reeled under the impact of the severe heat waves. With higher temperature being forecast over the coming week, people will have to gear up to face the heatwaves by all possible means. Street vendors get busy, soft drink and fruit juice vendors were seen minting money as customers were queuing a beeline to quench their thirst.
