Ujjain : A cloth shop on Tower Chowk was gutted in fire that broke out on Wednesday morning. Material worth lakh was destroyed in the fire. No loss of life has been reported.
Costly clothes, mostly women suits and lehangas, worth Rs 2 to 3 crore have been lost in the fire, said owner Palash Surana. The police are yet to ascertain the exact losses. Madhav Nagar police immediately reached the spot to assess the situation.The smoke emanating from the shop could be seen from the area. Eyewitnesses said the fire was first spotted by a watchman who informed a neighbouring shopkeeper at around 7 am. The shopkeeper failed to connect to the Fire Department helpline and informed the police. The police said a thief who entered the shop for stealing goods started the fire. The thief by mistake started the fire by a candle, which he was using to spot the items. The thief was caught by the local watchman while he was trying to escape the area. The thief was handed over to police. A complaint was lodged by the owner at the police station.
