Ujjain : Citizens celebrated the festival of Krishna Janmashtami with fervour here on Monday. Prayers and ‘special aartis’ were organised at all Radha-Krishna and other temples of the city. Janmashtami was celebrated in the city with religious fervour and gaiety here on Monday.
On this auspicious day, lord Krishna was born to diminish the evils prevailing in the society. The day holds great significance among Hindus and the ardent followers of Lord Krishna who solemnized the festival with lots of devotion. Large crowd of devotees thronged ISKCON temple, Gopal Mandir and many other temples where floral arrangements and special prayer sessions were conducted. Aarti, kirtan, bhajan and recitation of Bhagwad Gita were also held at most of the temples. Idols of Sri Krishna were bathed, decorated at midnight, and worshiped at homes with many rituals performed during prayers. After all the rituals were performed, people broke their fast and the Prasad was shared with all the people around. Various spiritual and cultural organisations also celebrated the festival at different places in the city.
Almost all temples, including ISKCON, Sandipani Ashram, Naryan Pura Dham, Gopal Mandir, Char Dham Mandir, and Chota Gopal Mandir of Tower square were beautifully decorated with glittering lightings. People thronged the temple whole day. Janmashtmi or lord Krishna’s birth was celebrated on Sunday at Bade Gopal Mandir, as the temple gates were opened at midnight the devotees filled the atmosphere shouting of ‘Jai Kanhaiya Lal ki’. The birth of Lord Krishna was celebrated with offering of mishri (sugar) and butter. Later, on the prasad of cardmom powder and mishri was distributed among devotees. Long queues were seen at all Radha-Krishna temples.
