Ujjain : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the second consecutive time registered sweeping victory in the civic body polls, for the party it was an attested victory while the observers differed. On the other hand, the Congress party, which is in muddy waters for long now, once again failed to woo voters and got a beat down in the election.
In the results for the polls of Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC), which were officially declared on Sunday evening, the BJP bagged 34 wards and the Congress got hold of 14 wards, out of total 54. The independents gave a jolt to both parties and registered victories in 6 wards. The BJP candidate Meena Jonwal fared as the winner for the post of mayor and defeated the Congress candidate Dr Kavita Gome. Meena Jonwal got 1, 34,976 votes and Kavita Gome got 1, 11,015 votes and fell short from less than 24,000 votes to clinch the seat of Mayor. Upon her victory, Meena Jonwal dedicated her victory to the public and Karyakarta of the party and said, “Holistic development of the city and successful hosting of the Simhastha Fair-2016 will be my top priority”. The defeat of the Congress candidate was seen on her and the dampened face told the details.
The Ujjainites once again showed their strength in choosing the mayor of the city and remained firm on their flavour of choosing a seasoned and experienced candidate for the head of city government. The new mayor Meena Jonwal favours the same flavours. She is around 38 years and was an outgoing corporator from ward number 48, from where her husband Vijay was also a onetime corporator. Meena belongs to Mahar community and is postgraduate in Philosophy. However, challenges remain dear for her and the foremost is working independently, which directly points toward the political background of her husband. Now Meena Jonwal will have to work out of closet and leave the image of her husband behind.
