Ujjain : Following the age- old tradition, a grand palanquin procession where a replica of Lord Mahakal was taken out on the occasion of Dussehra festival here on Friday.
The whole procession route was decked with devotees, whose hands were filled with flower petals, waiting roadsides for palanquin to arrive. Amidst the sea of humanity, fluorescent flash lights, scent of incense sticks and sandal paste, colourful flowers and the chorus chant of ‘Jai Shri Mahakal’ was all that one can see, smell and hear on the occasion. Milling devotees who thronged the place crane their necks to catch a glimpse of the decorated idol kept in the palanquin. Every few yards the palanquin stopped for the devotees to have darshan, give offerings and get prasad.
Number of welcome stages was significantly increased where different organisations had orgainsed welcome of deity in a grand manner. Police horse riders, two platoons of Special Armed Forces (SAF) and a police band along with various priests and residents accompanied the procession in whole route. Deity on the occasion donned the traditional Holkar Mukhota (mask). The exclusive procession of Mahakaleshwar was begun from Mahakal temple and it passed through Patni Bazaar, Gopal Mandir, Chhota Sarafa, Sati Gate, Kanthal, Nai Sadak, Daulatganj, Malipura, Dewasgate, Chamunda Mata square, Freeganj Railway Over Bridge, Freeganj Tower, and Police Control Room and concluded at Dusshera Maidan. Priests, purohits accompanied the palanquin.
The whole procession route was decked up with devotees who created a rain of flower petal during whole procession route. Palanquin procession of Mahakaleshwar was accorded warm welcome at several places in the city. People enthusiastically showered flower petals on the palanquin and worshipped the replica of Lord Mahakal. Mayor Rameshwar Akhand, MLA Mohan Yadav and UMC Speaker Sonu Gehlot welcomed the procession at Grand Hotel. When procession passed through Tower Square and Freeganj area, huge crowd of devotees gathered just for a glance of Lord Mahakal. Administration and police had made elaborate arrangement for smooth flow of proceedings. Also, traffic police made arrangement for unbarred traffic flow.
As the procession of Lord Mahakal reached Dusshera Maidan, Collector Kavindra Kiyawat, SP Anurag and MTMC administrator Jayant Joshi performed pujan of replica of Mahakleshwar before the Ravana’s effigy was burnt at the ground. Under the tree of Shami, the replica was presided and pujan was performed with the recital of hymns and mantras. After the pujan the palanquin returned to temple around 8 pm. Following the ageold tradition leaves of auspicious Shami tree were looted by the people around there. The leaves are considered to be auspicious and lucky as they bring prosperity in one’s life.
