The Indira Gandhi National Open University ( IGNOU) that runs a host of courses in several streams has now decided to spread e- literacy at grassroots level.

Recently, the IGNOU senior officers had

held a meeting and took this decision.

According to sources, the objective is to enhance the use of Information Technology ( IT) in the areas of a citizens interest by adopting simple and commonly used practices and methods, a university officer said.

” By eliminating the digital divides, we are eliminating all sorts of divides. The programme would be available in e- learning mode and would aim to import IT knowledge at different levels of IT literacy,” said a senior officer pleading anonymity. The reason is that it has officially to be approved.

For the 12th Five Year Plan ( 2012- 13 to 2016- 17), one of the identified strategies is to enhance skill and ensure employment generation.

IGNOUs 3,000 study centres and tele- centres, district and block- level centres of the ministry of Human Resources Development ( HRD), Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and rural development programmes could be used for spreading the IT awareness, the varsity official said.

It has not yet decided that when the e- literacy programme would be started at the ground level in the state.
