Ujjain : Drizzle accompanied by high velocity winds resulted in the disruption of power supply to various parts of the city on Wednesday and Thursday. Besides, several city residents faced power cuts ranging between eight and nine hours due to a major fault in the supply lines of the city, specially in the new part of the city.

Residents blamed that the private company Essel which was entitled the task to maintain the power supply of the city, failed to meet the promises they made. The promises of the unbarred power supply have fallen to the grounds. The residents blamed that if the company had made proper pre monsoon maintenances none of this would have happened. The company, which could have gained the praise of residents, has resulted in utter despair. The claim of the residents are also true, as most of power outage occurred due to trees falling on lines and of the maintenance shut down taken by the company have now appeared as a lie.

Power cuts were reported from areas including Mahashweta and Kiosk zone of the city, besides several other areas of the city. In Mahashweta area, there was no power supply from 6 pm of Thursday to 11 pm of Friday. The power supply had not been restored in Maksi Road zone till late evening. Uprooted trees and branches damaged electricity poles and wires at several places, hitting power supply to various areas, villages and colonies. After the storm, the DISCOM Essel received around 300 complaints from various parts of the city within past 48 hours. Numerous trees were found uprooted in all parts and traffic was clogged resulting in serpentine queues of traffic on all corners of the city. At Dewas Road near Bharatpuri Junction was blocked after a huge tree fell on the ground, blocking the traffic on the road. Electricity wires of the area were also snapped along with the tree.

Several other trees fell in the areas of Kothi Road, Alkapuri, Sethi Nagar and Rishi Nagar areas of the city. The residents and small scale industry owners of the Kiosk and Maksi Road zone gheraoed the Maksi road sub-station, over the black out. The gherao continued for 3 hours, the protestors relented after senior DISCOM officials reached the spot and assured restored power within an hour. Essel PRO Saurabh Shasti said there was no power in some areas due a technical snag in the power supply lines from the Kiosk zone. Similarly, a fault had occurred in the 33 kV line in the Industrial Area, Chakor Park, Maksi Road which also resulted in power cuts in the nearby areas. The department immediately restored the power supply in areas where trees had fallen on supply lines, he said.
