Hour- long rain accompanied by hail causes severe damage to crops
Ujjain: Rain and hailstorm continued to wreaked havoc in the district causing severe damage to crops and leaving the farming community in despair. Rain and hailstorm swept the city and adjoining areas on Monday causing heavy damage to both standing and reaped crops. About 6 mm rainfall was recorded in the city on Monday.
During the hour- long rain and hailstorm crops of several hectares were damaged. The unseasonal rain also disrupted normal life in the city. It was a sunny weather till noon but dark clouds started appearing in sky in the afternoon. It started raining heavily at 3 pm and continued for an hour. It also started falling marble- sized hailstones which covered the streets. Several people came out and gathered hailstones. After an hour- long raining and hailstorm, the weather again turned to normal and sunny.
The sudden rain caused troubles to the farmers and traders in Krishi Upaj Mandi on Monday.Hundreds of farmers had brought wheat and gram crops to the mandi for sale. Traders have stored the grains under open sky and several bags of wheat were also stored at Krishi Upaj Mandi. Due to the sudden rain, the wheat got wet and it caused loss to the farmers as well as to the traders. Rains lashed the district for the second consecutive day. Hailstorm had destroyed wheat, gram and other crops across the district.
SDM Rohan Saxena and tehsildar conducted survey of hailstorm- hit areas on Monday.They visited Koyalkhedi, Begampura and Malikhedi villages.Videography of the affected crops was also done.
SDM Rohan Saxena informed that Rs 17 crore has been demanded from the government to provide compensation to the farmers. Videography will be kept as record for the affected crops. Efforts are being made for providing compensation to farmers at the earliest, he added.
