Ujjain : The dry spell of the rain gods has taken a toll on the farmers as it has led to an increase in the cost of agricultural inputs for them. The farmers feel the prevailing conditions would hit them hard. The monsoon which planted high hopes in the farmers is now troubling the farmers who sowed their fields and are waiting for rains. Farmers are a worried lot. After waiting for rain for almost two months, most farmers have resorted to dry sowing. If there is no rain, there will be no germination as the soil has gone dry, says joint director agriculture Patel. Further, the crop sown during this time needs advantage of the monsoon moisture which has started withering due to lack of rain.
If it rains over the next one week, as predicted, there is every chance of a good recovery but if the dry spell prolongs beyond, the farmers will be in trouble. According to official data more than 95 percent of farm land has been sown by the farmers and now they are waiting for one thing, rain. The district has received an average rain of 11 inches. Ghatiya tehsil topped the chart with 15 inches and Nagda remained at lowest with 6 inches of rain till now.
