Govt expects rise in cereal production this year

The State Government assessed the damage to crops due

to frost to the tune of more than Rs 8000 crore and also distributed compensation totalling Rs 1395 crore. But now, from the estimates of cereal production this year, there are doubts over the actual damage to crops due to frost. It also appears that some manipulation was made in the compensation distributed in the name of frost damage.

According to a press release issued by the Government, it is expected that cereal production this year will touch 46.61 lakh metric tonne, which, in comparison to the last yearalt39s production, is around 4 lakh metric tonne more.

The said estimation of the Government has exposed the reality of damage caused to crops by the frost. In the year 2008- 09, 37.09 lakh metric tonne cereal was produced in the State, where as in 2009- 10, cereal production increased to 42.73 lakh metric tonne.

From 2008- 09 to 2009- 10, there has been a rise of 5.64 lakh metric tonne in production and in the current year too, the Government hopes of rise in 4 lakh metric tonne in cereal production.

It is interesting to note that had the crops been damaged due to frost, there would be no rise in cereal production this year and if there is rise in cereal production, it means that Governmentalt39s estimates, as far as damage to crops due to frost is concerned, are wrong.
