Doctors’ strike leaves patients in lurch at district hospital

Ujjain: Doctors working at district, civil hospitals and community health centres in the district went on strike leaving patients helpless here on Friday. Patients who approached district hospital and Madhav Nagar civil hospital had to undergone lot of trouble as there were no doctors to provide them treatment.

The government hospital doctors went on a day long strike in protest of police action taken against doctors in Lakhnadon, Siwni and Ratlam recently. About 73 doctors of the district did not appear on their duty on Friday and joined the mass strike. Though administration had forced Essential Service Maintenance Act ( ESMA) considering the strike of doctors, but it did not make any impact on doctors.

The striker doctors assembled at Sethi Building and staged their protest against the police action on doctors. Total 73 out of 75 doctors joined the protest while two doctors CS Bhargava and SS Khare were present on their duty.

Administration made alternative arrangements at district hospital to provide treatment to patients.Doctors from RD Gardi Medical College were called to serve patients. Outdoor patients’ department remains locked at district hospital due to doctors’ strike. City dispensaries and health centres were seen closed throughout the day. As nurses were not on strike, they served patients keenly. Doctors ended the strike after 3 pm after court’s order on a public petition.
