Ujjain: A debt-ridden farmer, who had suffered extensive crop damages in the recent bout of hailstorm and unseasonal rains in division, allegedly committed suicide here at Bhatpachlana, on Tuesday. Kamlashankar (62), son of Kaluram Malviya a marginal farmer who subsisted on wheat cultivation and poultry farming, consumed poison at his house in the area as he had been under debt, police said.

He had borrowed money from various sources to keep up his small-scale cultivation and poultry farming, they said. He suffered a huge loss due to failure of the crop because of which he was unable to clear the debts. Stressed over his financial crisis, took the extreme step said his son Umesh, he was rushed to Bhatpachlana dispensary, but due to his deteriorating condition, he was referred to Ujjain civil hospital, where he succumbed to the poison during treatment. Farmer was survived by his wife and two children police said, adding that a case was registered in this regard.
