TALKS FAIL, FAST IS ON

these issues can be resolved in one day as there are long term implications.” Still he felt the Yoga guru will relent in a day or two as he said ” Baba will do what is right.” Both Sibal and Sahay later drove

down to the PMalt39s House to brief Dr Manmohan Singh. Sources said they told the Prime Minister that the Baba was quite enthusiastic from the response document they gave to him and as such their reading is that he will relent in a day or two to wind up his satyagraha.

Manmohan also briefed President Pratibha Patil on the deliberations.

The government has no problem from thousands who have already started arriving here to join his grand show, so long as it is limited to Saturday and Sunday when the government offices are closed and disruptions of traffic can be tolerated.

He was, however, told by the Sibal- Sahay duo that the government will not be able to concede any further beyond the steps listed in the document handed over to them and it will not interfere if he wants to carry on his satyagraha indefinitely without any result.

All the same, sources in the Prime Ministeralt39s office ( PMO) said doors for further talks have been kept open if the Yoga guru wants some clarifications for a compromise.

Sibal said the government has addressed all the issues Baba had raised in writing after their airport rendezvous on Wednesday. ” We told him that most of these issues are of national concern and the government is already seized of many of them,” he added.

Immediately after arriving at Ramlila Grounds, he put the document before the people to explain what the government has accepted and what remains and declared that his satyagraha will continue so long as the government does not concede his demands fully. He wants 100 per cent acceptance of the demands.

His body language, however, showed that he was subjected to a carrot- and- stick treatment by the two ministers as he left the hotel without talking to reporters and chose to speak out after remaining huddled with his advisers to finalise the stand.

Notwithstanding his aggressive postures, the Baba conceded that the government has walked quite a length to accept some of his demands and he is happy about it, particularly on Sibal giving a word on behalf of the government to introduce the Public Services Delivery Guarantee Act within one year and introduce use of Hindi and other regional languages as medium of instructions besides English in the engineering, medical, ayurvedic and agricultural colleges.

He also told the gathering amidst loud clapping that the government has also agreed to set up special courts to decide corruption cases within one year and recover the corruption money from the guilty. He claimed 99 per cent agreement on this issue as the government was also prepared to consider life imprisonment for the corrupt though not ready to heed his suggestion for death sentence. ” We will give time to the government to implement,” he said.

Some people were seen sleeping on the mattresses while some were taking bath in the open. More than 5,000 ceiling fans and coolers, 1,300 toilets and bathrooms have been installed at the site.

An eight ft long stage has been set up for the yoga guru from where he will instruct his followers. Large screens alongside the stage have also been installed.

The sitting area near the stage is being divided into three parts – one for those who will sit for fast for a single day, one for those who will sit for the entire duration and one more for daily visitors.

Drinking water and medical facilities will be provided to people participating in the Satyagraha. ” We have a water purification system for drinking water and 650 water taps have also been installed,” said Acharya Virendra Vikram, president of Bharat Swabhiman Trust, Delhi.
