HC pulls up Thane policemen for inaction against politicians son
SADHNA KUMAR MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court has came down heavily on the Thane police for its inaction in connection with a case registered against the son of Pa
ppu Kalani, a noted criminalturned- politician. The court remarked that the conduct of police was like the police of Bihar and UP. A division bench headed by justice V M Kanade was hearing a petition filed by Sunil Nandlal Sukhramani seeking a CBI inquiry into the offence registered against Umesh Kalani and several others for brutally assaulting him. Appearing for the petitioner, advocate Ganesh Gole told the court that accused freely roam the area without any fear even as the police watch mutely. The court asked the police why the accused were not arrested despite their anticipatory bail pleas being rejected.
The police, in the response, told the court that they required their seniorsalt39 permission for arresting the accused. Irked by this statement, the court asked the police to explain the provisions under which senior police officers permission was required to arrest the accused. The court also directed the police to file an affidavit by August 16, explaining why the accused have not been arrested yet.
Three more picked up for Azad Maidan riots
MUMBAI: The Mumbai Crime Branch on Wednesday picked up three more youngsters from the Dongri area of south Mumbai in connection with the riots that took place on Saturday, where 63 persons were injured including 42 police personnel. ” The three men are aged between 20- 25 years.
We have some photographs that we had circulated to our informers and at the Dongri police station. Acting on a tip off the trio was picked up from the Dongri police stations purview,” said a senior crime branch official. ” The youngsters have admitted that they were present during the riots and have sustained minor injuries at that time. We are verifying their involvement after which they will be arrested and produced in the court,” he added. Another crime branch official said, ” We are also collecting evidence against the 23 persons who were arrested a few days back. If we do not find any hard evidence against any one, he will be let off as per the provision under section 169 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 ( CrPc).”
Woman stabbed to death in Thane
THANE: Unidentified miscreants killed a woman while she was sleeping in her house in Boisar area of Thane district, police told PTI. The miscreants broke open the house at around 1.30 am and stabbed 27- year- old Poonam Virendra Prasad to death while she was sleeping along with her family, police said. The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained. A case has been registered while search for the assailants was on, they added.
