Ujjain : Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC) has been handed over another task of cleaning the water scant Kshipra River during the Simhastha-2016.
UMC has been entrusted the task to work as an agency for completing the work of river ozonation given to it by the State government. The proposal for the same plan was passed in the Mayor in Council meeting, chaired by Mayor Meena Jonwal held on Tuesday. The firm will install several huge ozonation machines at various places from on the stretch of Kshipra from Triveni Ghat to Ramghat. The whole problem behind the idea is that the Rs 10 crores are being invested to keep the water clear during the Simhastha fair only and after that the river will once again be dependent on its own. The proposal looks short sighted as it does not reveals any long term plans to save the river. However ozonation is very effective in killing the bacteria and germicides which are not disinfected by chlorine. Also Ozone can eliminate a wide variety of inorganic, organic and microbiological problems and taste and odour problems.
The proposal was passed by the state level high power committee for Simhastha fair and UMC was entrusted the task. However the MiC member including Kalawati Yadav and Satyanarayan Chouhan, both ruling party corporators also opposed the proposal demanding demonstration of the technique. The demand was rejected as the machinery employed is heavy and cannot be transported for testing purposes. Mayor Jonwal informed that the technology will cleanse the water thoroughly and will make the river water potable at all spots. She said the same technology was used to clean golden temple lake in Amritsar.
Ozonation machinery will be installed by the company at 6 places on the river stretch for Simhastha fair and after the Simhastha fair the company will leave a machine at Ramghat for further usage. However the tender of the company mentions not conditions for the maintenance of the machine after the contract duration. According to sources, the annual maintenance cost of the machine is around Rs 78 lakhs which will be ultimately paid by UMC. Further the government is planning to release treated water of Gambhir dam into the Kshipra along with Narmada water during the Simhastha which will have different organic properties and the output of ozonation will be unpredictable. Although ozonation is very effective in cleaning river water but the step is not going to help the river in sustaining, as it is a method of water purification not river purification.
