A scenario of irregularities in cleansing policies and blank commitments of leaders could be easily gauged from the ancient step well ( Bavdi) situated at Shree Manchhaman temple in Manchhaman colony. Since a
ges this holy sacred temple is fulfilling the wishes of not even local people but people from across the country.
Instead of furnishing this holy place, people are greeted by huge treasure of garbage, waste of Poojan ingredients, old and broken god idols and stack of garlands inside the holy step well and absence of proper electricity facility at the temple makes matters worse.
A devotee Yuvraj Singh Raghuwanshi explained how this cultural and religious place of the city was awaiting getting lighted up and upgraded for last three years as the step well was last cleaned by Ujjain Municipal Corporation and social workers including devotees during the dry year of 2009 as it was the only water resource which served almost 4,000 people of nearby areas excluding water tankers which were also filled by this place.
But after getting back enough water, people started throwing garbage over here and the place became a trenching water area full of morass containing old and broken god idols and all the stuffs of their poojan, making it a breeding ground of mosquitoes and insects.
Another devotee Kishore Thakur blamed faith and superstitious of people behind the distress of the step well.
He also focused on how people and administration were ignoring this holy place despite of their awareness programmes of ancient water bodies in the city. Devotees have knocked the administrative doors umpteen times for remedy of morbid water body polluted with ignorance of people but no action was taken against their complaint as this step well is located on a private land which is quite a big cause of no action on their complaints.
Pundit Ashutosh Shastri, Pujari stated that irrationality of superstitious people compelled an ancient water body to become polluted more than sewerage as administrations ignoring attitude towards it was also a major cause behind this consequence. He appealed to the administration to stepin to put the well back in order to provide a cleansing treatment as this holy step well is also an important part of public faith and worship which could be developed as a tourist attraction.
A positive step could redraw the step well scenario if instead of throwing garbage and idols, local people come ahead and serve this with their service together, he concluded.
