New Delhi : Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal accepted on Monday that he is an anarchist. He did so as he announced a 10- day agitation to be led by him against the Delhi Police, which he wants should be under the state government.
This long- standing demand has acquired the form of a showdown between the central government and the sixweek old Congress- supported AAP government after a clash between the law minister Somnath Bharti and the Delhi police. Kejriwal has demanded immediate action against three police officers and is not prepared to wait for the report of an inquiry that has been ordered into this episode by Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.
AAP leader ogendra adav has questioned the role of the BJP and the Congress in opposing Kejriwal’s demand for full statehood. ” When it has been a part of their election manifesto, they should join the dharna instead of opposing it,” said adav.
The protest is a reflection of the tenuous nature of the Congress- AAP relationship.
The AAP has been critical of the central government and is seen to be provoking the Congress into withdrawal of support. Its actions have been met by a retort from the Congress that instead of getting into street politics, the AAP should govern Delhi.
The AAP dharna in busy parts of central Delhi, which has all the government offices, had a huge impact as four metro stations were shut down, roads closed, and thousands of policemen were deployed to control the law and order situation. This is also the area where the Republic Day celebrations are held, and to make matters worse for the central government Kejriwal suggested that these annual celebrations should be called off as ” they cannot celebrate the R- Day when women are unsafe in the city- state.” Kejriwal’s protest has drawn a sharp reaction from Shinde who has chided him for not respecting the dignity of the office of chief minister. ” He should maintain dignity of his office, especially since the Lt Governor has assured a judicial inquiry. He should have patience, he should cooperate,” said Shinde. The Home Minister briefed the prime minister on the agitation late at night.
UTTER CHAOS ON MONDA
• Arvind Kejriwal defies prohibitory orders to stage protest against city’s police • Utter chaos in rush hour in central Delhi, putting aam aadmi to much inconvenience • Even the four metro stations in the area had to be closed • Thousands of cops, tasked with securing the area ahead of Republic Day, are instead deployed at protest site • MoS for Home has cancelled leave for all Delhi Police personnel • AAP men clash with cops, refuse to shift protest site to Jantar Mantar • This is just the beginning of 10- day protest: Kejriwal spends night at AAP protest site • CM brings files to dharna site and works from there.
Kejriwal wants Delhi government must be given charge of city’s police force, which reports to the union government via the Home Ministry.
SELF- CONFESSED ANARCHIST
” They say I am an anarchist. es, I am.
Today, I will create anarchy for Mr Shinde.” ” We will teach a solid lesson to Congress in Lok Sabha elections.”
A MANIFESTO PLEDGE
” AAP manifesto said that the party will be completely responsible for safety of Delhi. Today what we are doing is exactly what we promised in our manifesto.” — ogender adav
Kejriwal spurns Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde’s offer that appropriate action will be considered against three Delhi Police cops the former wants suspended after an inquiry.
Kejriwal is seeking immediate suspension of the cops, who he has accused of dereliction of duty
