Thiruvananthapuram: The Left party in Kerala on Friday decided to move ‘right’ by throwing open its sacred space of public sector undertakings to the private sector. At the same time, the Red party has decided to roll out the red carpet to the private sector in key sectors like education, research and tourism.
According to a draft paper being discussed at the State convention in Kollam, there is a need for a drastic makeover within the CPM in order to win the Assembly elections in 2026 after it got a drubbing in the recent Lok Sabha polls.
Senior CPM leaders admitted that the party has to move with the changing times. How far will the Red party dilute its colour is to be seen, analysts said.
Speakers at the convention said that unless leaders change their attitude, Kerala will become another Bengal. “After ruling for over three decades, the West Bengal leaders thought they were invincible and put themselves above the party. This is happening in Kerala too,” a senior member warned in his address.
Few units of the CPM accused the Kannur lobby in the party of cornering all the jobs in the government sector. “This is creating a heartburn in the party,” an area secretary said.
The members took a protective attitude towards Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan while reserving some harsh comments against the state party general secretary MV Govindan.
Pinarayi will roll out the draft plan for the state and spell out his strategy for a consecutive third term in the Assembly in Kerala over the weekend.
