Scrivener has been described as a “word-processing program designed for authors”.  It offers a system to manage your documents, notes and metadata.  This, in turn, allows the user to organise notes, concepts, research and your whole document for easy access and reference.  It can link up text, iages, PDF, audio, video, web pages, and more.

After writing a piece of text, you can export it to a standard word processor for formatting.

What makes Scrivener different is that it offers you a “corkboard” that helps to rearrange files by dragging-and-dropping virtual index cards in this outliner.  The split screen mode enables you to edit several documents at once.  Then there is the ability to save a copy of a particular document before you make any drastic changes.

No wonder it gets called aliterary ‘project management tool’.  It is compatible with the Apple.  There is no official release for Linux, but there is a public beta version.  The Windows version is regularly run on GNU/Linux using the WINE compatibility software.
