YMCA win mini crown

Mumbai : Mastan YMCA scored an impressive 66-47 win over arch-rivals Nagpada Basketball Association (NBA) to clinch the mini boys’ title, in the Mastan YMCA Basketball Tournament, on Thursday. It was a neck-and-neck championship round with Mastan enjoying a slender nine-point advantage for most part of the first half of the fourth and final quarter. NBA kept their hopes alive until the home side went on the rampage by scoring at will in the last three minutes to run away with the title. Sayyed Mudassair top-scored for Mastan with 23 points, while Saad Shaikh added 18.

Bilal Khan scored 16 and Nehal Shaikh contributed 15 for NBA. Andheri YMCA and St. Anthony’s, Chembur registered exciting wins to set up the women’s championship round. Andheri YMCA beat Indian Gymkhana 52-49, while St. Anthony’s overcame Bandra YMCA 30-28 in the semi-finals. Andheri, who led 20-16 at half-time, faced a strong second-half challenge as Indian Gymkhana staged a gallant fightback to take a 32-31 third quarter lead. It led to an exciting fourth quarter that could have gone either way with Andheri regaining the advantage and holding on to a 50-49 lead with seven seconds remaining before Shreya Salian fired the final basket to give Andheri a nail-biting win.  Mastan YMCA ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams, Savio Club and Nagpada Basketball Association (NBA) entered the men’s semi-finals.


Mini boys (Final): Mastan YMCA ‘A’ 66 (Sayyed Mudassair 23, Saad Shaikh 18) bt NBA 47 (Bilal Khan 16, Nehal Shaikh 15).

Women (Semi-finals): Andheri YMCA bt Indian Gym 52-49; St. Anthony’s bt Bandra YMCA 30-28.

Youth boys (Semi-finals): NBA bt Savio Club 53-36. QF: Wellingdon YMCA bt Basket For Success 41-34.

Junior boys (Quarter-finals): Ghatkopar YMCA bt NBA 68-63

Men (Quarter-final): Mastan YMCA ‘B’ bt Chembur YMCA 80-62; Savio Club bt Bandra YMCA 73-42; NBA bt Indian Gym 80-71; Mastan YMCA ‘A’ bt Ghatkopar YMCA 69-56.
