Mumbai: Western Railway grabbed the first day honours defeating counterparts Central Railway 3-2 in the opening Elite Division match of the MDFA League – 2014-15, played under fading light at the Cooperage ground, on Friday evening.
Charanjit Singh, Tarun Nirwan and Somi P.T, who converted a penalty, got the goals for Western while Chetan Waghela and Zuber Desai scored for Central.
Western did not have to wait, too, long to opening the scoring as right midfielder Charanjit slotted past Central goalkeeper in the 13th minute.
Fifteen minutes later, Charanjit punted the ball ahead for Nirwan, who did well to control the ball before poking it past goalkeeper to double Western’s lead.
After changing ends, Central managed to reduce the deficit when Waghela against the run of play found the back of the net in the 52nd minute.
But two minutes later, Central defender Krishna Naidu derailed their fight back when deliberately handled the ball inside the proscribed area which resulted in a penalty kick being awarded to Western. Somi made no mistake from the penalty spot slotting the ball past goalkeeper Kumar to the right corner.
However, Central continued to put up a determined fight but could only manage to score the second goal in the first minute of additional period through Zuber Desai. The Central Railway side could have ended up on the winning side had their enterprising medio Chirag Shaikh not missed a number of clear chances.
