Cricketer Gautam Gambhir feels that Virat Kohli is very lucky since his franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has shown its trust over him despite poor performance of the team under his captainship. “You cannot compare him to someone like Rohit or Dhoni at this stage because he has been part of RCB and captaining RCB for the last seven to eight years and he has been very lucky and should rather thank the franchise that they stuck to him because not many captains have got such a long run where they haven’t won a tournament,” Gambhir was quoted as saying by Star Sports.
Kohli has been retained by RCB even after his poor win percentage as a captain. Under Kohli’s leadership, the team has won only 44 games out of 96, with a win percentage of 45.83. Gambhir also feels that Virat Kohli is not a tactful captain as some others like MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma has won trophy three times. “Still a long way to go. I don’t see him as a shoot captain or a tactful captain. And he hasn’t won the IPL. So ultimately a captain is only as good as his record till the time you don’t win the IPL. There are people who have won the trophy three times – MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. So I think he has a long way to go,” Gambhir added.
In spite of having powerful hitters like Chris Gayle and Ab de Villiers other than Kohli, RCB has not been able to lift IPL trophy even after reaching too close. RCB has entered finals on three occasions in 2009, 2011 and 2016, only to lose it in the end to their opponents. IPL 2019 opener will be again a crucial test for Kohli, as RCB is bound to play the first match against Chennai Super Kings, the defending champions, on March 23.
