Mumbai: Vijay Navnath the local outfit defeated a tired looking Bandya Maruti Seva Mandal from the neighbouring BDD Chawls 16-11 to annexe the title in the U Mumba Future Stars Kabaddi Tournament organised by Unilazer the franchise for Mumbai in the forthcoming Pro Kabaddi League.
The tournament was the first of the three to spot a dozen talented juniors for the U Mumba team. The next two are scheduled to be held in Thane and Mumbai Suburbs later this month. Omkar Jadhav the mercurial raider of the winning team was chosen the best player. Bandya Maruti Seva Mandal looked jaded as they took the field with a 20 minute break whereas their rivals had more than an hour’s rest as they had contested the first semis.
It was Omkar and his fellow raider Sanjay Rane who were responsible in guiding the winners to a 10-5 lead at the break. In the latter half rival raider Vinod Atyalkar and his mate in defence Sagar Patil tried their best to bridge the gap but Vijay Navnath did enough to run out winners.
In the semis the title winners outclassed Vijay Club (Dadar) 19-10 while Bandya Maruti had to beat back a late surge from Shivshakti and win 31-29 which proved to be the main cause for their lacklustre show in the finals. Bandya Maruti were leading 21-8 at the break but Sagar Kurade and Santosh Warkari brought the latter back and roaring into the no holds barred contest. But Sagar getting trapped with four minutes left , sealed Shivshakti’s fate.
For Bandya Maruti ,Vinod led the charge with 4 victims in one raid and the first half gap of 13 points proved a tall mountain to climb for Shivshakti who were all out twice during that period.
