London : Four-time Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel dedicated his maiden win for Ferrari to his childhood hero Michael Schumacher after emerging top in the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday. Vettel, who moved to Ferrari this year from Red Bull as Fernando Alonso’s replacement, won a strategic battle as Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton struggled with tyres in the scorching heat. Describing Michael Schumacher as his ‘hero’, Vettel said that it had been his dream, adding that all the kids at the go-kart track looked up to him, and it made their lives when Schumacher turned up to shake hands every year, the BBC reported.

The German further said that Schumacher left very large footsteps but the target was not to fill those but to leave some new ones. Schumacher emerged from an induced coma in June, and recovered enough to leave hospital in September nine months after suffering severe head injuries in a ski accident in the French Alps in December 2013. Ferrari and Vettel’s performance came as a wakeup call for both Mercedes and Formula One, with the German manufacturer having dominated the sport since the start of last season.

Reflecting on his performance, Vettel said that it was a great achievement and the whole team was there – great strategy, great pace, adding that they defeated Mercedes fair and square. Vettel insisted that the key was the way the tyres lasted, admitting that’s where they were able to close the gap compared to Mercedes.
