Mumbai : Top seeded Sri Vaishnavi Peddi Reddy of India defeated her unseeded compatriot Pranjala Yadlapalli to claim the girl’s singles crown in the CCI-ITF Junior Boys’ & Girls’ under-18 Tennis Championship.

Meanwhile, Taipei’s third seed Chih-Chun Tang warded off a spirited challenge from unseeded Indian Gravit Batra to claim the boy’s singles title. Tang scored a 6-2, 6-7(4) 7-5 victory in a little over three hours.

The 17-year-old Vaishnavi from Hyderabad encountered quite a strong challenge from her city mate, who is four years younger, before pulling off a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory.

The upcoming youngster, Pranjala, who knocked out second seed Hana Mortagy of Egypt and third seed India’s Snehadevi S Reddy, in the last two rounds, showed promise of another upset when called the shots in the opener to clinch the first set. But the experienced Vaishnavi, who last week won the ITF Junior title in New Delhi, pulled up her socks and managed to find her range of strokes to unsettle her young opponent to win the next two sets to emerge triumphant.
