Mumbai: Unseeded Vaibhavi Trivedi of Gujarat shocked eighth seed Shehnaz Singh of Delhi in a three-set thriller, in the opening round of the Rs. 3.60 lakh Dreamzkraft All India Women’s Open Tennis Tournament, at the Khar Gymkhana on Tuesday.
Rajkot-based Vaibhavi returned to competition from a five-month long hiatus following an ankle injury to give the tournament an explosive start with a 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) win on a day that also saw sixth seed Aastha Dargude of Maharashtra crash to unseeded Terrtha Iska of Andhra Pradesh in straight sets.
Following a tight opening set that could have gone either way, Vaibhavi of H.L. College of Commerce, who trains at the Ahmedabad Racquet Academy, frittered away two match points in the third set at 5-3 and 5-4, before making amends in the tie-breaker to snatch a nail-biting win.
Top seed Eetee Maheta of Gujarat sailed into the second round without dropping a game and was joined by defending champion and second seed Himani Mor of Haryana, third seed M. Aarthi of Tamil Nadu, No. 4 Akshara Iska of AP, fifth seed Manya Nagpal of Delhi and seventh seed Preethi Ujjini of Karnataka.
