London: English football club AFC Sunderland has announced it will cut season-ticket prices for the 2016-17 season. Sunderland, currently threatened by relegation in the English Premier League, became the second club to adopt this measure after West Ham, reports Efe. West Ham earlier said it would lower the prices after the announcement of the new television rights contract.
“Next season, adult season cards are priced from only 350 pounds (18 pounds per game) and supporters over the age of 65 can enjoy a special price of 250 pounds for their seat for the new campaign,” Sunderland said in a statement on Tuesday . Starting from the 2016-17 season and for the next two years, the clubs of the Premier League will be paid 5.1 billion pounds ($7.2 million), according to the new television rights contract.
The debate over high ticket prices gained special relevance on February 6, when thousands of Liverpool supporters left the Anfield Stadium 77 minutes into a match against Sunderland in protest against the increase the club had announced.
