Sumesh Nair pilots Air India to victory

Mumbai: Sumesh Nair’s double-strike enabled runners-up Air India to script a 3-1 win over Kenkre FC in an Elite Division Group-B play-off match of the Rustomjee-MDFA League, at the Neville D’Souza ground, Bandra here on Friday. Sumesh struck in the 22nd minute, but 10 minutes later Kenkre restored parity when Bharat Thapa found the back of the net. Air India regrouped to take the lead, and it was Nair yet again. Jordan Koli consolidated the lead in the 67th minute and assure them full points in this league. Air India has completed assignment in this league format with six points. Central Bank also has six points but a match in their last match against Kenkre, and win would assure them their supermacy in this league. Kenkre have mustered three points.

Nicholson billiards
The top guns, including Siddharth Parikh, Devendra Joshi and Rohan Jambusaria will be seen in action representing their respective teams in the CCI Kekoo Nicholson BSAM Billiards League 2019, which is scheduled to commence from April 29 to Sunday, May 26. A total of 29 teams will be fighting it out for the top honours in this competition which will be played on a league-cum-knockout basis.

India’s fifth ranked Parikh is the captain of P J Hindu Gymkhana Probables, sixth ranked Joshi will captain Matunga Gymkhana’s MG Night Kings and India number seven Jambusaria is named as skipper of Mandpeshwar Civic Foundation’s MCF Tough Men. The teams have been divided into eight sections and the teams will play on a home and away basis during the initial phase of the league, which will conclude with the third week ending May 18. Two teams from each section will qualify for the knockout phase starting from the pre-quarter-finals. The semi-finals will be played on May 25 and the league will culminate with the grand finale to be played on May 26 in celebration of the birth anniversary of Late Kekoo Nicholson.

Rink football
Leading footballers from the city will be seen in action during the Catholic Gymkhana Rink Football Tournament, to be played under floodlights at the Gymkhana’s newly laid artificial turf, Marine Drive from May 7 to 16. The tournament will be conducted under the auspices of the MDFA.  Teams interested in participating in the tournament are requested to collect the entry form from the Catholic Gymkhana and submit the same along with the necessary entry fees to the Gymkhana latest by Tuesday, April 30, 2019.
