London: Spain and Barcelona midfielder Xavi has announced his international retirement from international football after appearing in his country’s national colours 133 times.

Xavi, 34, was a member of the teams that won successive major tournaments at Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and Euro 2012.

Xavi told a press conference on Tuesday that he was grateful for the opportunity to represent Spain, and described it as a fantastic time.

He was quoted by The Guardian as further saying that henceforth he would just be another fan of the Spanish team, which had given him so many marvelous, proud and wonderful moments.

Xavi made his international debut in 2000.
