Mumbai : Soham Rane upset fourth seed Parthav Kelkar to storm into the junior boys semi-finals, in The Malabar Hill Club 3 Star Mumbai City District Table Tennis Tournament on Monday.
Rane overcame Kelkar 6-11, 11-4, 11-8, 12-10, 12-10 with a late burst after dropping the opening game. Rane snatched the crucial fourth game over extra points and won the next again over extra points after rallying from 8-10.
Rane triggered an exciting day of quarter-final action as third seed Omkar Patil survived a scare and second seed Atharva Kurade registered a hard-fought win.
Patil lived dangerously as he rallied from 1-2 and 2-3 to clinch a thrilling decider at 12-10 against Tanmay Rane in a best-of-seven battle. Patil enjoyed an envious 6-1 lead in the final game until Rane raised hopes of an upset when he drew level at 9-all and reached match point at 10-9.
Top seed Shubham Ambre sailed through with a 4-0 win over Manasvin Toprani. The tournament, which is being held under the auspices of the Mumbai City District Table Tennis Association (MCDTTA), includes categories for men, women, and youth, junior, sub junior, cadet and midget boys and girls.
