Mumbai: Seasoned campaigner Rushmi Chakravarthi, a former international and an Olympian, used all her experience and guile as she outshone Sneha Reddy 7-5, 6-4, to enter the pre-quarterfinals of the US $15,000 CCI- ITF Women’s tennis tournament on Tuesday.
The 36-year-old stalwart from Tamil Nadu was a bit too tentative initially and was down 2-4 in the opening set. Even in the seventh game, she trailed before she hit back tellingly to take four games in a row. As she led 2-1 in the second set, she appeared to be coasting to comfortable win, but it was not so.
She committed three double faults in the next game to let Sneha back into the match. However, she recovered in time to put her fighter and younger opponent out to move into the last 16. Qualifier Riya Bhatia, from Delhi, sent her rival fourth seeded Shweta Rana chasing from one corner to another with a flurry of forehand and double-handed drives before she won 6-2, 6-2 win. Riya next takes on Vaniya Dangwal, who got the better of Manya Nagpal 6-3, 7-5 in a closely fought tie. However, another qualifier Mumbai’s Sagrika Phadke, failed to match the speed and power of seventh seeded Delhite Prerna Bhambri and was comprehensively beaten 1-6, 1-6.
Even the top seeded Prarthana Thombre was taken the distance by Sai Samhitha Chamarthi before the 19-year-old was through with 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 victory.
