Mumbai:Six footer Piyush Salekar from Pune downed fourth seeded Kaivalya Kalamse from Nanded 6-4, 6-4 to bag the boys under-16 title in the All India Ranking Championship Series tennis tournament, hosted by Chembur Gymkhana at their courts on Monday. The corresponding title in the girls singles went to top seeded Dakshata Patel, who made short work of Serah Menezes 6-1, 6-1.
Both the boys employed different tactics. While Piyush was more circumspect, mixing aggression with caution, as he played his forehands as well as the doubles handed backhand with a lot of control. Kaivalya tried to be more attacking and in the process, was error prone. Kaivalaya, who had knocked outs top seeded Poojan Desai earlier in the semi-finals, tried in vain to play attacking strokes, but was outthought by Piyuish.
Dakshata Patel, the girls top seed, made to put out Sareh Menezes challenge wihout much of a fuss. Dakshata triumphed 6-1, 6-1. In the semi-finals, Dakshata Patel got the better of Aaliya Ebrahim in a pulsating three-setter ( 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4) while Sereh Menezes did not lose much time to beat Tejal Kulkarni win to win the tie 6-3, 6-2. Former India Test cricketer Balwinder Singh Sandhu, who was the chief guest, gave away the prizes.
