Mumbai: Sixth seeded Natasha Palha moved fast and played aggressively against Nikita Deshmukh that forced the latter to concede the tie after Natasha won the first set 6-0 and led 4-0 in the second to enter the pre-quarterfinals of the CCI- ITF Women’s tennis tournament on Monday.
Natasha had finished runners-up to Gujarat’s Ankita Raina in the last Nationals played at Kolkatta. “That has been my best performance so far at the national level,” said Natasha after romping home in the singles. Third seeded Rishka Sunkara from Delhi outplayed wild card Jeni Patel from Gujarat 6-3, 6-1 while the only qualifier to move into the pre-quarters was Mumbai’s Adnya Naik, who disposed off another qualifier Anushka Sathe 6-1, 6-0.
However, the doubles ties produced plenty to thrilling rallies.Sagrika Phadke, who went through the qualifying round to make the main draw of the singles, was equally impressive with Sahan Shetty as per partner in the doubles.
The pair after being stretched by the Delhi pair of Varuna Chandrashekhar and Smriti Joon in the first set, won 7-5, 6-3. The best tie , however, was the one between British and Taipei pair of Eden Silva and Ching-Wen Hsu and the Tamil Nadu pair of Sai Smitha Chamarthi-Snehadevi Reddy, which saw fortunes fluctuating time and again before the British-Taipei pair triumphed 6-4, 0-6, 10-6.
