Mumbai: Top seed Murli Subramaniam of JVPG claimed the top honours when his opponent second seed Vilas Kuvale of MIG Club after losing the opening game and trailing in the second retired during the men’s 45+ singles final of the 22nd G.D. Birla Memorial Masters Inter-Club Badminton Tournament, sponsored by Birla Sunlife Insurance and jointly organised by Badminton 45 and Bombay Gymkhana.

In the final, played at the Bombay gymkhana’s badminton courts, Subramaniam controlled the rallies well and won the first game 21-7 with a degree of comfort. He continued to hold sway in the next and with Kuvale in some sort trouble, the top seed raced to a 17-9 lead before the latter threw in the towel.

Later at the prize distribution function, Subramaniam received the R.S. Maroo Memorial Trophy and the winners’ cheque of Rs 8,000, while runner-up Kuvale got a cheque Rs 4,000.In the men’s 45+ doubles final, the top-seeded Bombay Gym pair of Ayaz Billawala and Shailesh Daga tamed the combination of Dinesh Golbare from Willingdon Sports Club and Rajesh Jadhav from Bombay Gym 21-5, 21-10.

Meanwhile, the men’s doubles (combined 80+ age) title was won by second-seeded duo of Sachin Bharati and Vilas Kuvale who beat Ajay Shrivastav and Upendra Fadnis 21-17, 21-16.Billawala and Daga were presented with the K.L. Bubna Trophy and prize money of Rs 4,000 each, while Golbare and Jadhav took home a purse of Rs 2,000 each. The winners of men’s doubles (combined 100+) Bharati and Kuvale got the Dhume Trophy and a cheque of Rs 4,000 each and the runners-up Shrivastav and Fadnis received an award of Rs 2,000 each.
