Mumbai: Fancied Mumbai District came up with a good combined performance and managed to scrape past Kolhapur District by a 3-2 margin in a closely fought sub-juniors girls WIFA Inter-District Football Championship, at the Palghar Taluka District SA ground, Boisar. the win assured the winners a place in the final. The Mumbai girls started in rousing fashion and asserted their dominance by taking the lead through Bhumika Mane’s strike in the sixth minute. Six minutes later junior India player Mehak Lobo was on target scoring the second goal. Kolhapur girls fought on gamely and reduced the deficit when consistent scorer Sanik Patil scored in the 18th minute. Later, Tanisha Laud got Mumbai’s third goal in the 29th minute before Sanik struck Kolhapur’s second in the 55th minute.

Earlier, in the first semi-final, Nagpur District got the better of Pune District 8-7 via the penalty shootout tie-breaker after full time finished in an exciting 3-3 draw. Kajal Warthi, Muskan Upadhyay and Sneha Uikey scored for Nagpur in normal play while Pune scored through a brace of goal from Purva Gaikwad and one from Anika Khanolkar. In the tie-breaker Nagpur successfully converted all their five attempts through Sejal Patil, Sneha Vikey, Dhanashree Sherkure, Vinanti Pendan and Muskan Upadhyay. Pune scored four through Purva Gaikwad, Tanvi Kore, Sapna Rajpure and Urvi Salunkhe).

Scoring at will, Don Bosco, Matunga registered a 15-0 win over Gokuldham High School in the boys under-14, MSSA inter-school hockey tounament at the St Stanislaus, Bandra here on Tuesday. In another match, St Andrews, Bandra bt St Theresa 2-0 and finished second in the Group A to qualify for the quarterfinals.

HDFC Bank advance

HDFC Bank dished out an impressive performance and charged to a fluent 4-2 win against Western Railway SA in an Elite Division match of the Rustomjee-MDFA League at the Western Railway ground, Mahalaxmi on Tuesday. Striker Sherwin Gonsalves got a brace of goals and Ramesh Singh and Utsav Maralkar scored the remaining two to seal HDFC Bank’s win. Western Railway scored through Merwin Stephen and Charanjit Singh. The HDFC outfit showed good understanding and excellent teamwork as they held a slight edge over the railwaymen. The bankers also cashed in on the opportunities that came their way to emerge worthy winners. Gonsalves rocked the Western citadel scoring the opening goal from a snap effort in the very ninth minute before Western roving striker Stephen scored the equalizer as the teams went into the break on level terms. Immediately after changing ends HDFC regained the lead when Ramesh Singh scored the second goal in the 47th minute. Western once again restored parity when Charanjit Singh found the net.
