Manchester : Hosts Manchester United passed up the chance to qualify for the Champions League round of 16 as PSV Eindhoven earned a deserved 0-0 draw to keep their own hopes alive. United dropped to second in Group B with 8 points from five matches. PSV sit third with one point less than United after the fifth round.
United had PSV penned in their half for much of the opening quarter but Jeroen Zoet remained untroubled. Jesse Lingard might have changed that when Anthony Martial let a Wayne Rooney ball pass through his legs and into Lingard’s stride, but the young winger’s touch was too heavy and he failed to profit. Without building up great momentum, United had a series of half-chances. The visitors were not helped by the early loss of winger Luciano Narsingh to an apparent hamstring injury, Gaston Pereiro taking his place, yet they grew into the game and steadily defended to hold on to a draw.
Juventus dethrone Man City
Italy: A first-half strike from Mario Mandzukic saw last season’s beaten finalists Juventus into the last 16 of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over injury-hit Manchester City. City, already qualified following their 3-1 win at Sevilla last time out, travelled to Turin looking to secure top spot in Group D as well as avenge their 2-1 defeat to the Bianconeri at the Etihad Stadium in September. But a second successive defeat to the Italian champions means City now look likely to finish second behind Juve in the group. Juventus are now two points clear before facing Sevilla.
