Khar Gymkhana felicitates its stars

Mumbai : Khar Gymkhana felicitated its galaxy of district, state, national and international sports achievers, at a star-studded awards function at the gymkhana on Independence Day.

 Apart from acknowledging the efforts of its top athletes, the gymkhana, renowned for its sporting tradition, also acknowledged the efforts of its coaches, sports secretaries and administrators including 93-year-old TND Pillai, who featured in the maiden Open doubles badminton competition way back in 1948.

Among the gymkhana athletes who received awards from former India cricket captain Dilip Vengsarkar, gymkhana president Sanjay Devnani and former Mumbai cricket captain Milind Rege were, swim sensations Neel Roy, Monique Gandhi, Sanjiti Saha, Avantika Chavan and Aditi Dhumatkar, current Asian junior girls tennis champion Mihika Yadav, Asia junior No. 1 in squash Tushar Shahani, former national men’s squash champion Manish Chotrani and his son Veer, Dutch Open quarter-finalist and Cologne Cup runner-up Aishwarya Khubchandani, India under-13 No. 1 Yuvraj Wadhwani and men’s world No. 51 Vikram Malhotra, national sub junior billiards runner-up Sparsh Pherwani, nationalsub junior billiards and snooker bronze winner Kreishh Gurbaxani, national 6-Red runner-up Ishpreet Singh Chadha, multiple junior winner and reigning table tennis queen Diya Chitale, Arosh Chaudhari, winner of the All India Sailing Championship 2017, and para athlete Prateik Gupta, a gold winner in swimming and powerlifting, who is also remembered for scaling Maharashtra’s highest peak, Kalsubai.

“The achievements of these young athletes is stupendous,” said Vengsarkar. “I always thought Khar Gymkhana was cricket-centric. But they have proved me wrong by producing so many superstars in other disciplines.”
