Virar: Maharashtra women and Karnataka men bagged the relay gold to stay on top of the overall standings in the 51 National Roller Sport championship – Speed at the Ameya Classic International Skating rink in Virar.Maharashtra women’s team of Anuja Bandiwadekar, Shivani Shetty and Deepali Naik pipped Varsha Puranik led Karnataka with Gujarat taking the bronze medal.

“It was special victory for us because Karnataka has a very strong squad and we are in direct competition with them for the overall title,” said Bandiwadekar after the race.However, that may not prove enough as Karnataka has so far amassed 305 against 124 of second placed Maharashtra squad.

In the men’s section, Karnataka team comprising Prithviraj Deshmukh, Yash Shankar and Prathik Prasad dominated the relay throughout. Haryana and Kerala took the silver and bronze respectively.Earlier, local lad Nikhilesh Tabhane bagged his third successive gold while Puranik dominated the women’s section in the Rink-IV (500m) individual event. Tabhane clocked a timing of 00:43.16 to claim the gola ahead of Karnataka duo of Raghvendra GV and Akash Aradhya.

In the women’s section, Puranik (00:48.95) had little trouble in staving off the challenge from Andhra Pradesh’s A Shraddha Reddy and Nilasha H A of Karnataka, who settled for silver and bronze respectively.
