Mumbai : Jolly Gymkhana, Vidyavihar stunned fancied CCI ‘B’ to progress to the final qualifying round, in the SCS Motiram Memorial Cup for men Inter-Club Badminton Tournament, at the Cricket Club of India on Thursday.
Jolly Gymkhana overcame the favourites 2-1 after Yogesh Sanghavi and Dushant Bhatia beat Jaidev Menon and Kashish in the deciding doubles 21-17, 21-16 in an exciting finish.
Rohan Parikh and Kaushal Mehta snatched a tight opening doubles tie 21-19, 21-18 over Yash and Naresh before Menon forced the decider by winning the second singles tie 21-11, 21-17.
CCI ‘A’ made amends for their ‘B’ team’s loss by labouring to a thrilling win over Balkan-ji-Bari.
CCI’s Neel Ramchandani and Monty rallied to beat Siddharth and Tateet 21-16, 16-21, 22-20, after trailing 18-20 in the decider. Harsh Jhaveri also endured a surprise challenge in the second singles before snatching a pulsating 21-19, 20-22, 22-20 win over a gallant Mohit Kanani.
MLWB, Thakur Sports Club, Khar Gymkhana ‘A’, and Matunga Gymkhana were the other teams to enter the final qualifying round with 2-0 wins.
